Sonia Salas, Assistant Vice President, Science & Technology
Sonia Salas joined Western Growers in October 2007 as Senior Loss Control Consultant performing workers’ health and safety consulting services. She quickly advanced within Western Growers and began supporting the Science and Technology division in 2009. She is currently WG’s Assistant Vice President, Food Safety, Science and Technology. In this role, she is responsible for developing, implementing, and leading diverse efforts including member guidance development, policy development, outreach, education, and training programs for the fresh produce industry in the areas of science and technology. Before joining Western Growers, she worked in different types of food facilities managing food safety and quality assurance systems and implementing federal, state, and local requirements.
She has played key roles in the development and maintenance of several food safety commodity-specific guidance documents and other resources. She is currently working on the development of data-sharing tools and efforts to advance produce safety. Sonia has published several articles in the Western Grower & Shipper Magazine. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Science from the Zamorano Pan-American Agricultural School and a Master’s degree in Agricultural Science from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona.
